August 5th - 8th, 2026 A Hin Residency Presentation
The Sound of Where I Come From
- A Hin Residency Presentation by Ryo Kobayashi an “𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘰-𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬”-ish workshop as the residency presentation
Coming from Japan, and perceiving George Town through an urban Japanese body, I find it quite fascinating how in various corners of the city, where people(what demographic?) relax at public area while playing music, watching news, doing live streams, or making calls directly through their smartphone speakers.
Unfamiliar mother tongues that I can’t even recognize, sources of sound I can’t allocate, and overlapping acoustic layers forming a soundscape so diverse that a foreign (East Asian) body like mine feels compelled to attune to all of it. Those sounds that were released into air in varying waves and frequencies, creating a kind of “sound bubble” around the body, that constantly interacting, negotiating, overlapping, and asserting a presence within the surrounding.
In this “𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘰-𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬”-ish workshop, presented as part of my residency, participants are invited to experience these soundscapes from my perspective—an invitation to observe my observation. We will walk through the cityscapes of George Town, carrying our smartphones, each playing audio(with provided instructions) in our own native language directly from our speakers, without earphones.
Between private bubbles and public presence, we search through our bodies for the right volume, negotiating sound, space, and existence with O/others.
Audio Walk Sessions:
Wednesday, Aug 5th: 8:00am-10:30am & 7:00pm - 9:30pm
Thursday, Aug 6th: 8:00am-10:30am & 7:00pm - 9:30pm
Saturday, Aug 8th: 12:00am - 2:30am (Midnight)

Riding a Resonant City
An experiential media/performative work that weaves together bicycle movement, radio transmissions, and a constellation of small “places of return” scattered throughout the city—reanimating the urban landscape as an archive of memory.
As participants ride while listening to three Discord-hosted radio broadcasts and stopping at designated sites, they encounter the dormant voices and unnamed presences embedded in the city.
Drawing on the Odyssey, the work creates moments in which the memories of those who cannot return—and those who are never called home—resonate through the rider’s body.
The act of moving through the city becomes a process of “re-encounter”: a mode of receiving, carrying, and momentarily restoring the memories of others.
Selected for the first round of the 23rd Aichi Arts Foundation Drama Award.

“Night Rider Kaifeng” Saitama←→Zhengzhou
A bicycle journey started by a group of female students from Zhengzhou to the neighboring town of Kaifeng has flourished through social media and has become a social phenomenon known as "Night Rider Kaifeng." This work is based on the “Night Rider Kaifeng'' that occurred in Zhengzhou City, a friendship city of Saitama City, and retrospectively explores the relationship between this two cities and Japan.
The trial performance in Saitama City was a tour-type performance in which participants actually rode bicycles themselves and experienced a combination of smartphones, AR, and audio guides materials.

An inner speech from elsewhere(pilot version)
Walking-based touring audio performance. Installed in countless cities from pilot productions.
Can we hear your voice? Can we sense your, suffering, pain and small joys? This work searches for the voice of "you" that can be heard by drifting through the city, following its traces, and standing still. I want to hear the voice of “you” who is thinking of me here. I think this is possible not only at the other shore, but also at the distance/conditions where we cannot see each other in this life. The voice we hear may be someone else's voice, a passerby in front of us, or perhaps yours. The vulnerability of “you” and me. We pick up an ashen body that we have lost sight of, as if we were holding a palmful of sand, and also expose our own bodies as such. And we experience the unsettling sensations that arise here, and receive them in each of our bodies. To experience becoming oneself through the other. I hope to use this creation as a pilot and install it in countless cities.

Ryo Kobayashi on An Inner Speech From Elsewhere
Echoes of History and Sensory Tensions: An Experiment within Body and City

December 3rd - December 17th, 2023 Sumida River Shinra Bansho Sumida Yume Project Planning sponsored by Sumida Ward
Sumida River Literary Walk
Created an audio guide that mixes ``readings of literary works by great writers with ties to Sumida'' and ``modern-day urban landscapes of Sumida.''
Visiting spots related to the work and listening to audio guides about the locations will bring a new sense to the familiar cityscape. Let's experience the old and new "Sumida" together
The changing scenery of Mukojima ~A literary walk is a requiem for the ever-changing "Sumida"~
The changing scenery of Mukojima: A literary stroll is a requiem for the ever-changing Sumida.
The northern part of Sumida (Mukojima) was rapidly urbanized after the Great Kanto Earthquake, and developed as a town of row houses, having escaped the ravages of war after the Great Tokyo Air Raid. On the other hand, the town's landscape has thease days gradually changed due to renovation of buildings and expansion of alleys, as its dense residential population poses a high risk in the event of a disaster.
After exploring Mukojima, Kobayashi felt a sense of crisis: "Nowadays, row houses and wooden buildings are few and far between, and will probably disappear in a few years.”
Kobayashi specializes in theatrical productions in the city, creating works to carry on the "history of the vanishing city of the past”.
He will perform a piece titled "Sumida River Literature Walk" as part of the "Sumida River: Shinra Bansho Sumi ni Yume" (Sumiyume) art project organized by Sumida ward.
Sumida has been treated as a location for many literary works. While listening to an audio guide of literary works depicting Mukojima in bygone days, visitors will use their feet to observe Mukojima in the present. By learning about the scenes that gave birth to the words of literature and tasting them with their own body, they will discover and reaffirm the unique atmosphere of this place.
I believe that knowing the value of a town is the foundation for creating our future town, and that is where we, city dwellers, can feel the raw reality of our city.

③Sumiyume × Klang River Festival Talk Event “City, River and Art Project” December 17th (Sunday)
Just like the Sumida River in the city of Tokyo, there is a river called the Klang river in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Both Sumiyume and Klang River Festival are art projects on urban rivers, and may be a mechanism to reaffirm the role of rivers as ``cultural corridors.'' Starting with a question from Kobayashi, who participated in both events, two staff talks were held online to consider the roles of "cities" and "rivers."

If there are places where people's experiences are stored beyond the life and death of an individual, does visiting places where these memories are accumulated bring us peace of mind? We will create an "audiobook of the region" to learn about the history and spirituality of the land, referring to the Dreaming Noh. By stopping by the site and playing the audiobook, we hope to create an encounter with the "spirits" of the land. This project is intended to be a personal viewing experience at the location noted in the audiobook during the theater festival. In addition, several guided tours (reservations required) will be offered on the dates and times listed. Through the experience of the performance, we invite visitors to open their senses to the environment and take them on a journey of contemplation of the self.

Review
Kobayashi's project "Anthropocene" was performed in the Toyooka Theater Festival 2023 fringe street. According to the festival website, "A walking tour-type performances will be held in a district called "Nakatakeno," which has a different atmosphere from the seaside Takeno. The world that can be seen through the local landscape and customs has been made into a play”. The audiobook is available for download from the QR code.
The audiobook's QR code is read, and the audience follows the map to the points of interest. At each point and along the way, you will listen to Chinen Mima (voice actor)'s storytelling through earphones. An abandoned elementary school. A temple. A garden of a house. A mountain range seen from a road by a rice field. A riverbank. An old gravestone and a large tree on the edge of a village where there used to be a mine. Chinen becomes "someone" associated with the place and whispers a story like an interrogative soliloquy in your ear. The tone of his voice, her breathing, and the comfort of the blank space. Before I knew it, my whole body was enveloped by a thick "human presence" in the empty landscape of Nakatakeno. I wanted to ask him as follows. “Who are you?" "Do you still live here?" "When did you come here?”” May I come see you?” I felt as if I wanted to talk to someone I didn't know, knee to knee.
The artist's words were full of rich connotations, such as "Nature is full of goodness" and "The earth is a land that contains both life and death," but it was impossible to tell whether these words were spoken by real people or were created through the artist's research. I am familiar with the location, as I live nearby, but what do I really know about this place?
When is this place, and where is it? The empty landscape in front of my eyes and the thick human presence evoked by the voices. I experienced a time in which my body and the space-time in front of me overlapped, shifted, blurred, and distorted. Many people must have lived on this land for many years. And the time of various lives that disappear without being spoken of or known. As I sat in the empty space and listened to the voices, I was enveloped in a strange and lovely floating sensation. This time was truly "Play”. It was not a guided tour of the city, but a time of " Play " in which a solid fiction emerged.

#Looking for Geniusloki
“Would you like to take a walk with me?”
Slowly turn your attention to your sensations. We create theater that responds to the land and atmosphere.
This project is a performance centered on ``responding to the environment while walking'' outdoors. By visiting several places while listening to the stories of local residents, I am thinking of creating an experience that evokes the storyteller's memories of the past and the past self associated with the place. In order to realize the project, we regularly work with dancers to connect the ``body'' and ``place.'' We are accumulating experience in these activities under the title ``Looking for #Geniusloki''.
